I quickly found out that the stock timing plate was not going to suffice as it was either not matched to the balancer or my motor truly needs more than 10 of initial advance. I don't see how 20 retard would be problematic. If the timing were locked in those same applications that are 35 total w/ a curve then it would be locked at about 35right With a 20 cranking retard that would mean 15 while cranking and 15 till 800rpm. Some camshafts are designed with "ground-in" advance. I have an 350 small block with an HEI ignition. Total timing would normally around 35 in most applications as far as I have seen.
